El día en Madrid

            El fin de semana pasado, UConn en Granada fue a Madrid. Espero que hubiéramos pasado más que un día allí porque la ciudad estaba tan hermosa y había tantísimas cosas para ver. Tuvimos un “día libre” en el cual nuestros deberes eran ver al menos tres sitios históricos.

            El primer lugar que mis amigas y yo visitamos era el Palacio Real.  Este sitio era mi favorito de los tres que vimos. Cada habitación era como un mundo diferente. Es una lastima que no se pudiera tomar fotos porque ya no me recuerdo los detalles. Una habitación era de tema rojo oscuro, un color muy real, y otras eran de azul claro, amarillo, o verde claro; y había imágenes de pájaros, pámpanos, uvas y otras frutas; y otra habitación tenían imágenes elevadas que aparecieron trinchadas sobre las paredes. El papel tapiz de otra habitación se parecía a terciopelo. Cada aspecto del Palacio Real estaba hermoso; ojalá que fuera más grande así que hubiera más para ver.

            El segundo lugar que visitamos era el Museo del Prado. Las pinturas principales que vimos allí fueron de Francisco de Goya, quien hemos estudiado en Historia de arte. Normalmente no me gustan los museos, pero porque reconocí varias pinturas de Goya y sabía las historias y las razones por ellas, me interesaban mucho. Por ejemplo, apenas vi La lechera de Burdeos me pensé, “¡Oh, la última pintura de Goya! La pintó durante su exilio y representa el devolver a la felicidad y a su estilo antes de que se puso sordo” (sí, raro, lo sé; pero de verdad es lo que pensé). Tenía pensamientos parecidos cuando vi Los Caprichos y Las Pinturas Negras. Al inicio, me sorprendía que Los Caprichos fueran tan pequeños, pero entonces me recordé que el profesor nos los había descrito como “estampas.”

            El tercer lugar que visitamos era la Reina Sofia. Teníamos prisa en este sitio porque tuvimos que encontrar el resto del grupo para cenar, así en seguida buscamos las pinturas de Salvador Dalí porque nos interesaban lo más. Mientras buscábamos Dalí, hallamos una obra muy destacada de Pablo Picasso – Guernica. De hecho, no supe nada de la pintura. ¡Si no estuvieran mis amigas para decírmelo, habría caminado por la pintura más famosa de uno de los pintores más famosos del mundo! Entonces, continuamos para buscar Dalí y vimos varias pinturas suyas, incluyendo las famosas El gran masturbador y La persistencia de la memoria.

            Al final, corrimos para ver las tres fuentes de Apolo, Cibeles y Neptuno y entonces cogimos el autobús a la parada más cerca al restaurante.

Our Day in Madrid

            This past weekend, UConn in Granada went to Madrid. I wish we had spent more than one day there because the city was so beautiful and there were so many things to see. We had a “free day” where our assignment was to see at least three historical places.

            The first place my friends and I visited was the Royal Palace. This place was my favorite out of the three we saw. Each room was like a different world. It’s a shame that you couldn’t take pictures because I already don’t remember details. One room had a dark red theme, which is a very royal color, and others were light blue, yellow, or light green; and there were images of birds, vines, grapes, and other fruits; and another room had raised images that appeared to be carved onto the walls. The wallpaper in another room was like velvet. Every aspect of the Royal Palace was beautiful; I wish it was bigger so there was more to see.

            The second place we visited was the Prado Museum. The main paintings we saw there were by Francisco de Goya, who we had studied in Art History. Usually I don’t like museums, but because I recognized a lot of Goya’s paintings and knew the stories and the reasons behind them, I was really interested. For example, as soon as I saw La lechera de Burdeos I thought to myself, “Oh, Goya’s last painting! He painted it during his exile and it represents his return to happiness and to his style before he went deaf” (yes, dorky, but that’s what I really thought).  I had similar thoughts when I saw The Caprichos and the Black Paintings. At first, I was surprised that The Caprichos were so small, but then I remembered that the professor had described them to us as “stamps.”

            The third place we visited was the Reina Sofia. We were in a hurry in this place because we had to meet the rest of the group to have dinner, so we looked for Salvador Dali’s paintings right away because they were what interested us the most. While we were looking for Dali, we found a very distinguished work by Pablo Picasso, Guernica. Actually, I didn’t know anything about the painting. If my friends hadn’t been there to tell me, I would have walked by the most famous painting by one of the most famous painters in the world! Then we continued to look for Dali and we saw many paintings of his, including the famous El gran masturbador and La persistencia de la memoria.

            At the end, we ran to see the three fountains of Apollo, Cibeles, and Neptune and then we caught the bus to the stop nearest to the restaurant.
