La señora

La señora

            Carmen y yo nos caemos bien. Estoy contenta que ella es la mujer con quien vivo porque no me gustan las reglas y ella no las tiene. Por ejemplo, no me gustaría tener que estar en casa a una cierta hora para cenar o almorzar, y a ella no le importa cuando salga y regrese. Tampoco le importa si yo no coma toda la comida que me ha dado. Si le digo que estoy llena, está bien, y como el resto durante la comida siguiente. Hace unos días, una amiga y yo estábamos caminando y quería saber si pudiera subir conmigo al apartamento. Llamé a la señora para preguntarle, y me dijo: “Sí, claro, ¿porque no?” Cuando le presenté mi amiga di las gracias a ella por dejar mi amiga subir y respondió: “Claro, esta es tu casa, niña”. Carmen es la mejor señora para mí.

My Señora

            Carmen and I get along well. I’m glad that she’s the woman I live with because I don’t like rules and she doesn’t have any. For example, I wouldn’t like to have to be at the house at a certain time to eat dinner or lunch, and she doesn’t care when I come and go. It also doesn’t matter to her if I eat all the food she’s given me. If I tell her I’m full, it’s OK, and I eat the rest at the next meal. A few days ago, my friend and I were walking and I wanted to know if she could come up to the apartment with me. I called my señora to ask her, and she said, “Yes, of course, why not?” When I introduced her to my friend, I thanked her for letting my friend come up and she responded, “Of course, this is your house, niña.” Carmen is the best senora for me.

Diferencias entre vivir en Italy y vivir en España

La primera cosa de que me di cuenta es que, en general, los españoles son más simpáticos que los italianos. Por ejemplo, los trabajadores de tiendas, vendedores, etcétera, en Italia a veces se aprovechan de los extranjeros. (Cuando estábamos en Italia hace una semana, ¡una mujer me dijo que el precio de una manzana fue un euro! ¡Que ridículo! Inmediatamente dije “no” y me marché. Y un conductor de taxi nos dijo que costaría 50€ llevarnos al aeropuerto, cuando otro conductor me había dicho la noche anterior que costaría 35-40€.) Bueno, me parece que los españoles no se aprovechan de los extranjeros y los precios son iguales para todos.
            Otra diferencia entre estudiar en Italia y en España: Cuando vivía en Italia, hablaba solo en italiano salvo durante la clase de inglés dos veces a la semana. No hablaban inglés mi familia ni mis amigos y aprendí italiano rápidamente. Aquí en Granada, hablo inglés demasiado y me temo que no hablaré español con soltura. Pero una ventaja de vivir en Granada es que me divierto más que en Italia – hago más viajes y me he hecho amigas de chicas buenas, y la amistad de ellas me tiene valor.

Differences Between Living in Italy and Living in Spain

The first thing I realized is that, in general, Spaniards are friendlier than Italians. For example, store employees, street vendors, etc, in Italy sometimes take advantage of foreigners. (When we were in Italy a week ago, a woman told me the price of an apple was a euro! How ridiculous! I immediately said “no” and left. And a taxi driver told us that it would cost 50€ to take us to the airport, when another driver had told me the night before that it would cost 35-40€.) Anyway, it seems to me that Spaniards don’t take advantage of foreigners and that prices are the same for everyone.

Another difference between studying in Italy and in Spain: When I was living in Italy, I only spoke Italian except during English class twice a week. My family and friends didn’t speak English at all, and I learned Italian quickly. Here in Granada, I speak English too often and I fear that I won’t be fluent. But an advantage of living in Granada is that I’m having more fun than in Italy – I’m taking more trips and I’ve made good friends, whose friendship I truly value.

Los Momentos Pequeños

A veces, unos momentos pequeños están los momentos que te recuerdes para siempre.  El fin de semana pasado, que me pasé en Portugal, tuve uno de los momentos.  Estuve con mi madre y mi hermana a un gira.  Estuvimos con nuestra guía y dos personas (esposos) de Sevilla.  El hombre sabía un poco inglés, pero la mujer no sabía nada de inglés.  En la tarde todos estuvimos en la coche y nuestra guía empezó a escuchar a los "Beatles."  Todas las canciones estuvieron en inglés, pero entonces la mujer empezó a cantar "Hey Jude," en inglés perfectamente.  En este momento todas las personas estaban cantando a los "Beatles."  Yo no sé porque, pero creí este momento fue muy especial.  El poder de música y los "Beatles" no termina nunca.

Sometimes, some small moments are the moments that you always remember.  The past weekend, that I spent in Portugal, had one of those moments.  I was with my mom and sister at a tour.  We were with our guide and two people (husband & wife) from Seville.  The man knew a little English, but the woman knew none.  In the afternoon we all were in the car and our guide began to listen to the Beatles.  All the songs were in English, but then the woman began to sing Hey Jude in perfect English.  In this moment everyone was singing to the Beatles.  I don't know why, but I think this moment was very special.  The power of music and the Beatles never ends.

¡Tengo la gripe!

Ayer, no me sentía bien, pero pensé que sólo estaba cansada. Yo estaba muy equivocada. En realidad, ¡Tengo la gripe! Por lo general, cuándo estoy enferma, mi madre me lleva Gatorade y pollo sopa de fideos.  Desafortunadamente, no hay Gatorade o pollo sopa de fideos en mi casa aquí  (No hay bagels también, la otra comida que comer cuando estoy enferma).  Por lo tanto, tengo un poco morriña en este momento, pero sé va a desaparecer una vez que me siento mejor.

Aunque me siento muy mal, estar enferma aqui es definitivamente una experiencia interesante.  Cuando le deje que no me sentía bien, la señora me quería llevar al hospital.  Deje que sólo necesitaba dormir, pero ella todavía estaba muy preocupada.  La semana pasada, tuve una hemorragia de nariz, y ella quería que me traigas al hospital tambíen.  ¡Muy extraño!

Los españoles manejar la enfermadad muy diferente que los estadounidenses.  En los Estados Unidos, mis padres le dicen que beber agua y tomar Tylenol cuando estoy enferma.  ¡Ir al hospital no se menciona nunca en mi casa!  A pesar de que me siento mal, creo que es un poco cómico lo rápido la señora me trata de dar la medicina.  Es muy diferente de mi casa, pero estoy feliz de saber que ella se preocupada para mí.

La buena noticia es que la fiebre bajó, y me siento un poco mejor ahora.  Espero que me siento bién para el lunes, porque tengo una semana larga, incluyendo un viaje a Londres el jueves.

Yesterday, I didn't feel good, but I thought I was only tired.  I was very wrong.  In reality, I have the flu! Generally, when I am sick, my mom brings me Gatorade and chicken noodle soup.  Unfortunately, there isn't Gatorade or chicken noodle soup in my house here (There aren't bagels also, the other food I eat when I am sick).  So, I am a little homesick in this moment, but I know it will disappear once I feel better.

Although I don't feel good, being sick here is definitely an interesting experience.  When I said I didn't feel well, my Señora wanted to bring me to the hospital.  I said I only needed to sleep, but she was still very worried.  Last week, I had a nose bleed, and she wanted to take me to the hospital then, too.  Very strange!

The Spanish deal with sickness very differently than Americans.  In the United States, my parents tell me to drink water and take Tylenol when I am sick.  Going to the hospital is never mentioned in my house! Even though I don't feel good, I think it is a little funny how quickly my Señora tries to give me medicine.  It's very different from my house, but I am happy to know that she cares about me.

The good news is that my fever went down, and I feel a little better now.  I hope that I feel good for Monday, because I have a long week, including a trip to London Thursday!

Las Ventajas de la Ciudad

Me gusta vivir en Granada porque es una ciudad y es muy diferente de vivir in Storrs, CT. Hay muchas ventajas que no hay un Uconn. Puedo caminar a todas de las tiendas. Hay una farmacia tres minutes por andar de mi apartamiento. Si quiero encontrar con mi amiga, hay muchos cafés cerca de nosotros. Vamos al café y bebemos café con leche para un euro y 20 centavos. Podemos ir de compras porque todas de las tiendas están cerca de nuestras casas. Es fácil para caminar a la escuela también. Me gusta que todo que necesito esta cerca. No es necesario para tener un coche. Los autobuses son buenos y van a todos de los lugares. Hay un autobús afuera de mi casa. Mi amiga y yo tomamos el autobús para ir a la estación de los autobuses para comprar billetes para nuestro viaje a Córdoba. Era fácil y conveniente. En la noche, porque es una ciudad, todos de los restaurantes están abiertos tardes y la gente no duerme. En Uconn, es quieto en la noche. Me gusta el ruido. Esta experiencia me da la oportunidad de saber como es la vida en la ciudad. 

Traveling Europe

Este fin de semana pasado, mi amiga y yo viajamos a Londres y Dublín. El viaje solo duró seis días, el jueves hasta el martes (porque fue fiesta Andaluz y no tuvimos clase el lunes y martes). Cuando estas aquí en España, es muy fácil viajar a múltiples piases cuando no tienes mucho tiempo. Nosotros salimos de Málaga el jueves y llego en Londres por la noche. Quedamos en Londres el viernes, y el sábado, y salimos para Dublín el domingo, por la mañana. Cuando llegamos en Dublín, quedamos dos días allí, y salimos por Málaga el martes por la mañana. Los vuelos fueron muy baratos a todos los sitios (el vuelo de Londres a Dublín solo cuesta 22 euros!). Es un gran oportunidad para viajar en todo Europa cuando estas aquí.

This past weekend, my friend and I travelled to London and Dublin. The trip only lasted six days, Thursday to Tuesday (because there was an Andalucian holiday and we did not have class Monday and Tuesday). When you are here in Spain, it’s very easy to travel to multiple countries even when you don’t have much time. We left from Malaga Thursday and arrived in London at night. We stayed in London Friday, and Saturday, and left for Dublin Sunday morning. When we arrived in Dublin, we stayed there for two days, and then left for Malaga Tuesday morning. The flights were very cheap to all the places (the flight from London to Dublin only cost 22 euros!). It’s a great opportunity to travel all of Europe when you are here.

Sierra Nevada - una nueva experiencia

En el fin de semana que ha pasado tuve una experiencia muy divertida. En el viernes, todo el grupo iba a la Sierra Nevada. La Sierra Nevada es un grupo de montañas muy altas y bonitas muy cerca de Granada.  Con las visita a la Sierra Nevada venía la oportunidad a esquiar.  Fue mi primer oportunidad a esquiar. Claro yo fui muy emocionada y no tuve ningún reservación. Solo he bajado una montaña en un tubo. Sin instrucciones, sin lecciones, yo me preparaba a caer muchos veces. Las primeras veces fueron difíciles y luché un poco a bajar la colina de principiantes sin caído. Después unas veces yo decidió a llevar el telecabina a la cima de la cuesta verde. El sendero verde es el primer nivel de esquiar. Soy feliz porque bajé cinco veces y solo caí una vez. Fue una experiencia muy divertida y gratificante y siempre es un buen idea a probar algo nuevo. Hay que aprovechar todas las experiencias y sin reservación, lo hice. Pasé un buen tiempo y tengo planes a esquiar con mis amigos españoles mañana.

Viajando en Italia

Estaba muy nerviosa viajar porque tuvimos que utilizar varios métodos de transportación que nunca había hecho antes, como el treno, el metro, y el autobús. Estoy acostumbrado a volar en avión pero no me gusta y también por eso estaba nerviosa. Primero, cogimos el autobús a Madrid a las 2:00 de la madrugada y entonces volamos al aeropuerto Ciampino en Roma. Desde allí, cogimos un autobús a la estación de metro, y entonces un metro al otro lado de la ciudad a nuestro hostal.

            Dos días después, tuvimos que ir por treno a Florencia, ¡y casi lo perdimos! Estábamos corriendo al andén, pero estuvimos a tiempo. Llegamos a Florencia más o menos a las 21:00 y era difícil encontrar el hostal porque en la ciudad hay dos sistemas de números – cada calle tiene números azules y negros y números rojos. Pero después de preguntar a algunos empleados de un restaurante, finalmente lo hallamos.

            Dos días después, regresamos a Roma por treno y pasó media la noche en un hostal. Creía que no valía la pena de pagar por dormir solo media la noche, pero la mañana siguiente estaba contenta que habíamos pagado y no dormido en el aeropuerto. Así, nos levantamos a las 4:00 y cogimos un taxi al aeropuerto y volamos a España.

Traveling in Italy

            I was really nervous to travel because we had to use many methods of transportation that I had never used before, like the train, the subway, and the bus. I am used to flying in planes but I don’t like it and so I was also nervous because of that. First, we took a bus to Madrid at 2:00 am and then we flew to Ciampino airport in Rome. From there, we took a bus to the subway station, and then the subway to the other side of the city to our hostel.

            Two days later, we had to go to Florence by train, and we almost missed it! We were running to the platform, but we made it in time. We arrived in Florence more or less at 9:00 pm and it was hard to find the hostel because in the city there are two number systems – each street has blue and black numbers, and red numbers. But after asking some restaurant employees, we finally found it.

            Two days later, we came back to Rome by train and spent half the night in a hostel. I thought it wasn’t worth it to pay to sleep only half the night, but the next morning I was glad we had paid and not slept in the airport. So, we woke up at 4:00 am and took a taxi to the airport and we flew back to Spain.

Sierra Nevada

Fui a Sierra Nevada para esquiar dos veces. Con cinco de mis amigos, fui a Sierra Nevada en Febrero para dos días y una noche. Cogimos un autobús publico muy temprano y alquilamos esquís, botas, bastones, gafas, cascos, y todo que necesitamos a la montaña para un precio muy barato. Los billetes son aproximadamente 45 euros cada día. Esquiamos todo el día y después cogimos una telesilla al hostal. El hostal tuvo la cena para nosotros y después dormimos muy temprano. En la mañana madrugamos y tomamos desayuno en el hostal. Esquiamos todo el día otra vez. Me encanta esta montaña pero es muy diferente de las montañas cerca de mi casa en los Estados Unidos. No hay árboles en ningún sitio aquí. Solo hay muchas piedras. Cuando fuimos, había mucha nieve nueva y el tiempo era muy agradable. Fuimos otra vez a la montaña con todo el grupo para un día y era un día excelente también. 

Esquiando en la Sierra Nevada

Nuestro programa de Uconn tomó un viaje a la Sierra Nevada. Me encanta esquiar y esta experiencia fue muy diferente de cuando esquío en los Estados Unidos. Cuando llegamos a la montaña, no hace mucho frío. Fue normal. Nuestros billetes para subir la montaña fue diferentes de los Estados Unidos porque no son afuera de la chaqueta. No me gusta este método en España. Cuando mis amigas y yo estamos más arriba en la montaña, esquiamos. ¡Fue increíble! Cuando estuvimos arriba, pudimos ver otras montanas en la distancia y era muy bonita. Se dice que en un cierto lugar en la montaña, se puede ver África. Sin embargo, mi amiga y yo no pudimos encontrar África pero esta bien. Esquiamos para mucho tiempo y después comimos almuerzo con otros estudiantes. Cuando regresamos a la montaña después del almuerzo, había muchos nubes. Cuando esquiamos debajo de la montaña, fue muy difícil para ver. Me da miedo porque nunca he esquiado en estas condiciones. Todo que vi era blanco. Me caí una vez pero es normal para mi. Ese día fue uno de mi días favoritas de este viaje. Mi amiga y yo queremos regresar a la Sierra Nevada pero no sabemos si es posible.  

Viaje a París

Hace dos semanas, yo fui a París para reunir con mi novio, quién está estudiando en Londrés. Estaba muy asustada a viajar sola. Nunca he viajado sola y no soy muy buena con la transportación pública. Pero, de sorpresa, ¡no tuve ningunos problemas! Estoy orgullosa. El viaje a París fue fenomenal y lo recomiendo a alguien que quiere viajar. Estaba allí por sólo tres días y ya quiero volver. Mi novio y yo fuimos a la Torra Eiffel y la nos subimos por las escaleras. La vista fue buenísima. Fuimos a la catedral Notre Dame, un museo de militar y vimos la tomba de Napoleon. Fuimos al museo de Louvre y vimos la Mona Lisa. Es verdad que París es una ciudad romántica y me gustó la comida de Francia más que la comida de España. Comimos en algunos restaurantes muy buenos y románticos. La razón principal que estoy escribiendo sobre París es porque quiero decir que es muy fácil a viajar en Europa. ¡No tengas miedo de viajar, como yo¡ Viajé por quince horas sin problemas. Cogí el autobús de Granada a Madrid, otro bus al terminal correcto, el avión a París, otro bus, y dos metros. Estaba tan nerviosa pero el viaje fue bien. ¡Ya quiero volver!

Two weeks ago, I went to Paris by myself to meet my boyfriend, who is studying abroad in London. I was very nervous about traveling alone. I have never traveled alone and I'm not very good with public transportation. But surprisingly, I didn’t have any problems! I'm proud of myself. The trip to Paris was phenomenal and I recommend it to anyone who wants to travel. I was only there for three days and I already want to go back. My boyfriend and I went to the Eiffel Tower and climbed the stairs inside it. The view was great. We went to the Notre Dame cathedral, a military museum, and saw Napoleon’s tomb. We went to the Louvre Museum and saw the Mona Lisa. It’s true that Paris is a romantic city and I liked the French food better than the food in Spain. We ate in some good restaurants. The main reason why I am writing this is because I want to say that it is very easy to travel in Europe. Don’t be scared of traveling like I was! I traveled for fifteen hours, without problems. I took the bus from Granada to Madrid, another bus to the correct terminal, the plane to Paris, another bus, and two metros. I was so nervous but the journey went well. I already want to go back!

Venecia y mi "lista de balde"

El estudiar en otro país le permite hacer cosas que siempre has soñado.  Yo sé que no existe la expresión “lista de balde” en español.  Quizás es una expresión larga, como “la lista de cosas  que hacer antes de morirse.” No estoy seguro.  Solamente sé que casi cada semana que estoy aqui he eliminado una cosa de mi lista.  Hacía muchos años que quería ir a Venecia. Antes, siempre veía la ciudad a través de las películas y  las fotos.  Cada vez que la vi, mi deseo de ir aumentaría más.

El viernes pasado fuimos a Venecia porque tenemos un fin de semana larga. Fue un día perfecto.  Hacía sol pero no hacía calor.  Durante la puesta del sol, mandamos una gondola! Todavía no puedo creer que fui a la ciudad que siempre quería ir.  Venecia es mi lugar favorito que he visitado hasta ahora. 

Studying in another country allows you to do things you’ve always dreamed of.  I know that the expression “bucket list” probably doesn’t exist in Spanish…Maybe it would be a longer phrase such as a “list of things you need to do before you die.”  I’m not sure.  All I know is that almost every week that I’m here I cross off something from my bucket list.  I have wanted to go to Venice for many years.  Before, I saw the city through movies and photos.  Every time I saw it, my desire to go would grow more.  Last Friday we went to Venice because we had a long weekend. It was a perfect day! Sunny but not too hot.  As the sun was setting, we rode a gondola! I still can’t believe that I went to the city that I’ve always wanted to visit.  Venice is my favorite place that I’ve visited so far.

Viaje a Londres y Dublin

El fin de semana pasado, fui a Londres y Dublín con Chelsie. Es muy fácil en Europa viajar porque todos los países son más o menos cercas. Y los vuelos son muy baratos en comparación a los vuelos en los Estados Unidos. Nuestra vuelo desde Londres a Dublín solamente costo 22 euros! Fue loco! En Londres vimos Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, y el cambio del guardia entre otras cosas. Mi parte favorito fue cuando nosotros vimos “Legally Blonde” el musical. Me encanta Dublín, la gente es muy simpática y los scones fueron increíbles. Vimos Trinity College Dublin, Christ Church, Dublinia, y los jardines botánicas. El viaje fue muy divertido e informativo; pero fue agradable volver a Granada.

This past weekend, I went to London and Dublin with Chelsie. It’s very easy in Europe to travel because all of the countries are more or less close by. And the flights are very cheap in comparison to the flights in the United States. Our flight from London to Dublin only cost 22 Euros! It was crazy! In London we saw Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, and the changing of the Guard among other things. My favorite part was when we saw “Legally Blonde” the musical. I love Dublin, the people are so nice and the scones were incredible. We saw Trinity College Dublin, Christ Church, Dublinia, and the Botanic Gardens. The trip was very fun and informative, but it was nice to return to Granada.

Comunicación a través de países

            Viviendo en España es una experiencia buenísima, pero es muy difícil comunicarse con personas viviendo en los Estados Unidos. Debido a que llamadas internacionales son caros, recomiendo que en el próximo semestre, los estudiantes usan Facebook, los correos electrónicos, y descargar Skype y textPlus a sus iPods o Smartphones. La tecnología del Internet es muy útil. 

            Tengo muchos cosas importantes que he necesitado hacer a través del Internet. Por ejemplo, tengo entrevistas para trabajos del verano en Skype. A veces, es difícil oír los empleadores a través de Skype, pero no hay una mejor opción. Uso Facebook para hablar con mis amigos sobre donde nosotros viviremos en el próximo año. Uso los correos electrónicos para hablar con los profesores sobre las clases que necesito tomar y la tesis que necesito empezar en el otoño. TextPlus provee una manera hablar con mi familia, mis amigos, y mi novio gratuitamente.

            Aunque a veces hablando a través de los países es casi tan difícil como hablando en Español, con la tecnología, la comunicación es más fácil.  

Communication Across Countries

            Living in Spain is a very good experience, but it is very difficult to communicate with people living in the United States. Because international calls are expensive, I recommend that in the next semester, the students use Facebook, e-mail, and download Skype and textPlus to their iPods or Smartphones. Internet technology is very useful.

            I have a lot of important things that I have needed to do through the Internet. For example, I have interviews for summer Jobs on Skype. Sometimes, it is difficult to hear the employers through Skype, but there is not a better option. I use Facebook in order to talk with my friends about where we will live in the next year. I use e-mails in order to talk with professors about the classes I need to take and the thesis I need to start in the fall. TextPlus provides a way to talk with my family, my friends, and my boyfriend for free.

            Although sometimes talking across countries is almost as difficult as talking in Spanish, with technology, communication is easier.

Carnavale in Cadiz

El sábado pasado, mis amigos y yo subimos un autobús y se dirigió a la costa sur de España, Cádiz por Carnaval! El viaje en el autobús fue cuatro horas, pero en el medio del viaje, paramos en una parada de descanso. Parecía que cada otro bus que iba a Cádiz se detuvo allí, porque había gente en los disfraces locos! Deseo que hubiera sabido que esto era como Halloween, porque nos han hecho todo lo posible y no sólo tenía en las coronas, alas, y las máscaras.

Después de la parada de descanso, finalmente llegue a Cádiz. Dieron bocadillos y sándwiches y relajado en la playa por un poco hasta que el sol se puso. Cuando se hizo de noche, que es cuando toda la divertida de Carnaval occurio. Era loca. Todo el mundo se agolpaba en las calles y en los más locos disfraces. Había cerdos, hombres vestidos de drag queens, y todo tipo de otros trajes locos. Lo recomiendo a todo aquel que participa en estudios en el extranjero en la primavera!

This past Saturday, my friends and I boarded a bus and headed to the southern coast of Spain, Cadiz for Carnivale! The bus ride was 4 hours , but in the middle of the trip, we stopped at a rest stop.  It seemed like every other bus that was going to Cadiz stopped there too, because there were people in the craziest costumes!  I wish we had known that this was like Halloween because we would have gone all out and not just had on crowns, wings, and masks.

After the rest stop, we finally made it to Cadiz.  We got snacks and sandwiches and relaxed on the beach for a little until the sun went down.  When it got dark, that's when all of the Carnivale fun happened.  It was insane.  Everyone was crowding the streets and in the craziest costumes.  There were pigs, men dressed as drag queens, and all types of other crazy costumes.  I highly recommend it to anyone who participates in study abroad in the Spring!

Mi Habitación

Conocí mi señora cuando llegué Granada el primer día. Un autobús me llevó de al aeropuerto a una parte de la ciudad donde conocí mi señora. Había muchísimas señoras allí, y todos los estudiantes no supieron quien fue sus señoras. Una señora empezó hablarme, y me dijo que ella quería un hombre (En mi programa hay 23 mujeres y 4 hombres). Otra mujer estaba leyendo una lista que tuve los nombres de estudiante y señora. Cuando la mujer dijo mi nombre, ella dijo el nombre de la señora a que yo hablaba. Ella se llama Yaquelin, y ella no quiere que se llame “Señora.” Entonces, ella empezó a gritar con excitación, saltó, y entonces me abrazó. Fui con ella a mi habitación que es en la Plaza de Gran Capitan, y allí conocí dos de mis compañeros. Los dos son de España en la provincia Andalucía (la región de Jaén).  Primero, conocí José o Pepelu. En España “Pepe” es un apodo de “José”. Pepe tiene 22 anos y estudia traducción y interpretación en la Universidad de Granada. Él habla español, ingles, francés, y neerlandés. El otro se llama Míguel, y estudia ingeniero en la Universidad. Ellos son muy cómicos y amables. También, vivo con dos estudiantes estadounidenses; un de la Universidad de Colorado, y el otro de la Universidad de Kentucky.

I met my senora when I arrived in Granada the first day. A bus brought me from the airport to another part of the city where I met my senora.  There were many senoras there, and all of the students did not know who theirs was.  One senora began to talk to me, and told me that she wanted a guy (in the program there are 23 girls and 4 guys).  Another woman was reading a list with the names of the student and their senora.  When the woman said my name, she said the name of the senora to whom I was talking.  Her name is Yaquelin (Jaquelin in English), and she doesn't want me to call her "senora." Then, she started to scream with excitement, jumped, and then hugged me.  I went with her to my apartment which is located in the Plaza of Gran Capitan, and then I met two of my roommates.  They are from Spain in the province of Andalucia (in the region Jaen). I met Jose, or Pepelu, first.  In Spain "Pepe" is a nickname for "Jose."  He is 22 and studies translation and interpretation at the University of Granada.  He speaks Spanish, English, French, and Dutch.  The other is Miguel, and he studies Engineering at the University. The are funny and extremely helpful.  I also live with two American students; one from the University of Colordao, and the other studies at the University of Kentucky.

¿Es marzo?

Mañana es el primer día de marzo y no puedo creer cuanto tiempo ha pasado. No me siento que he vivido aquí para un mes. Me ha tomado algún tiempo para ajustar a esta cultura pero he decido que me gusta mucho. La ciudad es muy bonita y el paisaje en las afueras es hermosa. Un día normal es que voy a la escuela y después, mis amigas y yo van de compras o solamente miramos en las tiendas. (¡Tenemos un budjet!) También durante este tiempo hay muchas liquidaciones se llama “Rebajas” y muchas cosas tienen precios bajos. Es mejor que las liquidaciones en los Estados Unidos. Después de ir de compras, es la hora para almorzar. El almuerzo es muy grande. Después del almuerzo es la siesta y todas de las tiendas cierran. Las oficinas y la tiendas abren después de la siesta, cerca de a las 5. Mi amiga vive con una señora y su hija, y la hija es un abogado. Ella regresa a la casa a las 10 y media en la noche porque trabaja tarde después de la siesta. A veces duermo durante la siesta o hago mi tarea porque tengo clase a las 3 y media o a las 5. Yo como la cena a las 8 pero mi otra amiga come a las 10. ¡Es muy tarde! Después de la cena, mis amigas y yo nos encontramos para helado o churros con chocolate. Muchos de los restaurantes tienen churros con chocolate. ¡Es una comida popular y es muy buena! Me encanta mis días en Granada y estoy emocionada para todo que va a pasar en los próximos meses.

Hostales de Italia

            Ayer, regresé de Italia. Llevábamos cinco días allá y visitamos a Roma y Florencia. En esta entrada de blog, me voy a concentrar en los hostales en que nos quedamos. Hubo tres en total.

            El primer hostal, según yo, fue lo mejor. La dueña nos dio toallas y hubo un baño dentro de la habitación (sí, estas cosas simples lo hacen lo mejor, como se verá). La habitación era de colores vivos y estaba muy preciosa y hubo wi-fi y un ordenador para que todos los huéspedes lo pudiesen usar. En el principio, la dueña parecía muy mal y no amable, pero nos ayudó encontrar los horarios de autobuses y trenos a Florencia, porque tuvimos una reserva en un hostal allí pero no sabíamos como íbamos a llegar. Nos quedamos en ese primer hostal dos noches.

            El segundo hostal también me gustó. La habitación estaba limpia y las camas estaban cómodas, aunque no hubo colores por las paredes; todo estaba blanco y aburrido. Recibimos toallas pero tuvimos que compartir el baño con otros huéspedes. A mí no me molestaba y me sentía que estaba teniendo una verdadera experiencia de hostal. También hubo wi-fi en ese hostal y la dueña hablaba muy poco inglés, así nos comunicábamos en italiano. Nos quedamos allí dos noches.

            El tercer hostal fue lo mejor y también lo peor. Fue lo mejor porque era lo más limpio y elaborado y parecía un hotel en vez de hostal. Fue lo peor porque se tenía que pagar para coger wi-fi y las toallas. ¡Y no hubo llaves para la habitación! ¡Solo se nos dio cerraduras pequeñas para las cajas! Y a partir de eso, habíamos reservado una habitación de cinco personas pero cuando llegamos nos dijo que hubo solo cuatro camas en la habitación, así que una persona tenía que dormir en otra habitación, con otros huéspedes desconocidos. Era una gran molestia. Nos quedamos allí solo hasta las 4:00 de la madrugada, cuando caminamos a la estación de trenos a coger un taxi al aeropuerto para regresar a España.

            Yesterday, I got back from Italy. We were there for five days and we visited Roma and Florence. In the blog entry, I will focus on the hostels we stayed in. There were three in all.

            The first hostel, according to me, was the best. The owner gave us towels and there was a bathroom in the room (yes, these simple things make it the best, as you will see). The room was colorful and very nice and there was Wi-Fi and a computer for all the guests to use. In the beginning, the owner seemed really mean and unfriendly, but she helped us find bus and train schedules to Florence, because we had a reservation in a hostel there but we didn’t know how we were going to get there. We stayed in that first hostel for two nights.

            I also liked the second hostel. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable, although there was no color on the walls; everything was white and boring. We received towels but we had to share the bathroom with other guests. That didn’t bother me and I felt like I was having a true hostel experience. There was also Wi-Fi in that hostel and the owner spoke very little English, so we communicated in Italian. We stayed there for two nights.

            The third hostel was the best and also the worst. It was the best because it was the cleanest and most elaborate and it seemed more like a hotel than a hostel. It was the worst because you had to pay to get Wi-Fi and towels. And there were no keys for the room! They only gave us little locks for these little boxes! Other than that, we had reserved a 5-person room but when we arrived he told us there were only 4 beds in one room, so one person had to sleep in another room, with random guests. It was a big inconvenience. We stayed there only until 4 am, when we walked to the train station to get a taxi to the airport to come back to Spain.

Mi familia español

Mi familia aquí en Granada es muy simpática. Tengo una madre y un hermano español. Mi madre es rubia y tiene ojos azules. Mi hermano es más moreno de su madre y es muy enfermo, entonces él vive con nosotros porque no puede trabajar. Él tiene problemas con sus riñones y está esperando para un trasplante. Todos los días los dos me piden sobre mis clases, mis amigos aquí, mi familia y mi vida en EEUU. Mi madre siempre quiere oír sobre el gobierno de EEUU y mi hermano le dijo << ¡Cállate!>>  porque a él, no le importa. Estoy muy contenta con mi familia y no podría desear para una familia mejor.     

Italia: Roma y Florencia

Como Kathryn dijo, el mejor parte de estudiar en Europa es la oportunidad a viajar a tantos países diferentes.  El fin de semana pasado, fui a Italia con mi amiga de los Estados Unidos.  Mi amiga, Hannah, está estudiando en Granada también, con Bucknell University.  ¡El jueves pasado, nosotros volamos a Roma!  Porque yo estudio historia, fui emocionada para ver todas las ruinas y la historia de Roma.  El primer día en Roma, el viernes, Hannah y yo fueron por TODAS partes de Roma.  Vimos el Coliseo, el Panteón, el Foro Romano, la fuente de Trevi, y los pasos españoles.  En la fuente de Trevi, yo ví mi amiga de Connecticut, y nosotros comimos gelado delicioso. :)

El sábado y domingo, Hannah y yo fuimos a Florencia.  Mis compañeros de fútbol estudian en Florencia, y era tan bueno a verlas.  Florencia es una ciudad MUY bonita.  Me encanta mucho, más de Roma.  Hay un rio en el centro de la ciudad, y hay muchos puentes sobre el rio.  Había mucha gente andando en bicicleta y no había muchas coches.  Fue pintoresco, pequeña ciudad que todo el mundo debe visitar.

Ayer, regresé a Granada después de un fin de semana largo fantástico.  Esta semana de clases es fácil porque sólo tenemos dos días de clase.  Ayer, cuando llegué a Granada era como volver a casa.  ¡Estoy muy contenta de pasar este fin de semana próximo en Granada!

As Kathryn said, the best part of studying in Europe is the opportunity to travel to many different countries.  This past weekend, I went to Italy with my friend from the United States.  My friend, Hannah, is studying in Granada too, with Bucknell University.  Last Thursday, we flew to Rome! Because I study history, I was excited to see the ruins and history of Rome.  The day in Rome, Friday, Hannah and I went to ALL parts of Rome.  We saw the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps.  At the Trevi Fountain, I saw my friend from Connecticut and we ate delicious gelado!

Saturday and Sunday, Hannah and I went to Florence.  My teammates study in Florence, and it was so good to see them.  Florence is a VERY pretty city.  I loved it a lot, more than Rome.  There is a river in the middle of the city, and many bridges over the river.  I saw many people riding bikes and there were not many cars.  It was a quaint, small city that everybody should visit.

Yesterday, I returned to Granada after a fantastic long weekend.  This week of classes is easy because we only have two days of class.  Yesterday, when I returned to Granada it was like returning home.  I am very happy to spend this next weekend in Granada!

Un Fin de Semana Largo

Este fin de semana tuvimos cinco días libres, porque Andalucía estaba celebramos su independencia.  Mi madre y mi hermana habían viajado a España el fin de semana antes, y estaba feliz para ver ellas.  Con mi madre y hermana, viajé a Lisboa en Portugal.  Soy una poca portuguesa, y hay muchas personas en la región donde vivo en los estados unidos que están portuguesas también.  Porque de este, las caras de las personas en Portugal eran muy familiares.  No podría entender mucha de la lengua, porque hay sonidos diferentes entre portuguesa y español, pero podría leer mucha de la lengua porque es muy similar a español.  En sábado,  un guía nos dio un gira sobre Lisboa.  Aprendí mucha sobre la historia de Lisboa, y a mi me gusta la ciudad.  En domingo, decidimos a tomar un gira sobre un lugar afueras de la ciudad.  Fuimos a Sintra y Cascais y vimos el palacio de Queluz y el parque de Pena.  Nos encantamos la gira, y decidimos tomar un otro gira lunes.  A veces cuando no tiene planes para sus dias tiene la oportunidad para hacer muchas cosas excelentes.  En lunes, fuimos a Sesimbra y Arrábida, y vimos playas bonitas y un parque natural en Arrábida.  Tristemente, el martes tuvimos que volver a sus casas, yo en Granada y mi familia en Massachusetts.  Estoy muy feliz que tenía la oportunidad para ver ellas, y voy a echarse de menos mucho.

This weekend we had five days free, because Andalucia was celebrating its independence.  My mom and my sister had traveled to Spain the weekend before, and I was happy to see them.  With my mom and sister, I traveled to Lisbon in Portugal.  I am a little Portuguese, y there are many people in the region where I live in the US that are Portuguese too.  Because of this, the faces of the people in Portugal were very familiar.  I could not understand much of the language, because there are different sounds between portuguese and spanish, but I could read a lot of the language because it's very similar to spanish.  On Saturday, a guide gave us a tour about Lisbon.  I learned a lot about the history of Lisbon, y I really like the city.  On Sunday, we decided to take a tour around a place outside the city.  We went to Sintra and Cascais and we saw the Queluz Palace and the Pena Park.  We loved the tour, and decided to take another tour Monday.  Sometimes when you don't have plans for your days you have the opportunity to do many excellent things.  On Monday, we went to Sesimbra and Arrabida, and we saw beautiful beaches and a natural park in Arrabida.  Sadly, on Tuesday we had to return to our homes, myself in Granada and my family in Massachusetts.  I am very happy that I had the opportunity to see them, and I'm going to miss them a lot.

¡Dos países!

            Mi cosa favorita sobre vivir en España es la oportunidad ver lugares bonitos. El fin de semana pasado, fui a Italia con mis amigas. Nosotros fuimos a las ciudades de Roma, Florencia, y la Ciudad del Vaticano. En realidad, la Ciudad del Vaticano es un país también. Por lo tanto, visité dos países durante este viaje. Ahora, en total, he viajado a cuatro países en mi vida.

            No me gusta viajar para muchas horas porque no puedo dormir bien en aviones, autobuses ni trenes. Sin embargo, valía la pena viajar para visitar Italia. Nosotros vimos la Fontana de Trevi, el Coliseo, y la estatua de David. Mi parte favorita del viaje fue cuando nosotros vimos el Jardín de Bóboli. En los jardines, con el sol, y las flores, me sentía muy contenta con mi vida.

Two countries!

            My favorite thing about living in Spain is the opportunity to see beautiful places. This past weekend, I went to Italy with my friends. We went to the cities of Rome, Florence, and Vatican City. In reality, Vatican City is a country also. Therefore, I visited two countries during this trip. Now, in total, I have traveled to four countries in my life.

            I do not like to travel for many hours because I cannot sleep well on planes, busses or trains. However, it is worth it to travel in order to visit Italy. We saw the Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, and the statue of David. My favorite part of the trip was when we saw the Boboli Gardens. In the Gardens, with the sun, and the flowers, I felt very happy with my life.
