Chíviri

Durante Semana Santa, yo fui a mi pueblo que se llama Trujillo, en la región de Extremadura. Trujillo tiene un gran festival para el domingo de pascuas que se llama Chíviri. La tradición es que todo el mundo se viste en los refajos tradicionales de pastores (para hombres) y pastoras (para mujeres). Los disfraces para pastoras son muy detallados y tienen muchas capas. Lo que se ve es una falda grande con un diseño floral, la camiseta blanca con cintas coloreadas, medias tricotadas, y zapatillas blancas con cintas que se ata por las piernas. Hay música todo el noche y día en la plaza mayor, pero solo toca diez canciones especiales para Chíviri una y otra vez. Todo el mundo esta bailando y disfrutando el día junto con su familia después de la semana larga con procesiones serias, que habían ocurrido durante los siete días antes. Yo estuve allí para Chíviri hace 13 años, pero para mi fui un experiencia diferente, porque soy más mayor. Me voy a recordar esta tradición especial para siempre.

During Semana Santa, I went back to my town named Trujillo, in the region of Extremadura. Trujillo has a huge festival for Easter Sunday that is called Chíviri. The tradition is that everyone dresses in the traditional outfits of shepherds for both men and woman. The costumes for the women shepherds are very detailed and have many layers. What one can see is a big skirt with a floral design, a white tee-shirt with colored ribbons, knitted stockings, and white slipper shoes with ribbons that tie up the legs. There is music all night and day, but on ten songs especially for Chíviri are played. Everyone is dancing and enjoying the day together with their family after the long week with more serious processions that had occurred during the past seven days. I was there for Chíviri 13 years ago, but for me it was a different experience, because I am older. I will always remember this special tradition.
